Fond du Lac County Clean Sweep

The Clean Sweep on April 27th collected more than five tons of hazardous chemical waste from households, farms and businesses.
141 households throughout Fond du Lac County brought potentially dangerous items to the event. A waste management company sorted the items and disposed of them safely, keeping them out of county drains and landfills.
Common items from households were aerosols, lead/oil-based paints, pesticides, poisons, caustics and corrosives.
Improperly disposing of hazardous chemicals impacts all of us be it through our water supply, our air or our soil. We thank the residents who made the effort to keep these things out of our drains and landfills.
The County Land and Water Conservation Department coordinated the event and hired Veolia Environmental Systems to package, transport and dispose of the chemicals. Treatment options include safe incineration of the flammable materials and recycling of other items.
The UW-Extension office maintains a list of items from drugs to electronics and expired fire extinguishers that are not safe in landfills. Directions for their proper disposal are at http://fonddulac.uwex.edu/cleansweep/.
The collection event is funded by a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection and Fond du Lac County.
