Wisconsin Spring Turkey Harvest Unchanged From 2018 Preliminary totals show Wisconsin turkey hunters registered 38,556 birds during the 2019 spring turkey hunting season, virtually unchanged from the 38,885 birds registered in the spring 2018 season. Although average temperatures were slightly below normal for the months of April and May, weather conditions were more favorable in 2019 than in 2018, specifically in the early and late seasons. This was especially apparent when comparing success rates during the Youth Hunts between 2018 and 2019. In 2018, a severe snowstorm covered much of the state and led to a belowaverage harvest of 950 birds for the Youth Hunt. In 2019, more favorable weather conditions led to a 49% increase in harvest, with a total of 1,953 birds registered during the Youth Hunt.

June 22 Is Guided Paddle Of Horicon Marsh On Saturday, June 22, canoeists and kayakers can join fellow outdoor enthusiasts on a 6.5-mile water trail through Horicon Marsh. Department of Natural Resources wildlife staff will be on hand to help guide paddlers and share information about wildlife of the marsh as boats go downstream through Horicon Marsh into the Rock River. The trail starts at the Green Head Boat Landing and ends at Nebraska St. Landing in Horicon. Features of the day are the 6.5-mile trail at the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area, listening and talking to wildlife staff from the DNR, who will be posted at various stopping places along the canoe/kayak trail, a free shuttle back to vehicles, help loading and unloading vessels and free parking. Restroom facilities will be available at the beginning and end of the trail.

Fight The Bite! Take Action To Prevent Tick And Mosquito Bites With the unofficial start of summer behind us, many Wisconsin residents are looking ahead to warmer weather and all the resources our state has to offer. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) has launched a statewide campaign to help everyone Fight the Bite and avoid tick and mosquito bites this season. Many people find ticks and mosquitoes to be annoying when they’re enjoying outdoor activities; but even worse, bites from either can make you sick. Lyme disease, spread by ticks, and West Nile virus, spread by mosquitoes, are the most common diseases spread by these pests in Wisconsin.

Cedar Community And United Church Camps Form Partnership Cedar Community and United Church Camps, Inc. (UCCI) have joined to create a ministry partnership to enhance programming and bring additional outdoor ministry opportunities to Cedar Community’s Cedar Valley Retreat Center, located on Highway D in West Bend. Cedar Valley Retreat Center has offered spiritual retreat opportunities for individuals and groups, artist workshops and a variety of classes since 1986.
