On September 19, Campbellsport football lost 24-0 to Mayville on the road in their Flyway Conference matchup.
Campbellsport (1-4, 0-3) got a first down on a Chris Taddey eight-yard run before having to punt the ball to Mayville (5-0, 3-0).
The Cougars’ defense was able to force a three-and-out from the Cardinals to get the ball back for the Campbellsport offense.
Carter Gellings ran for 12 yards out of the quarterback position to get the Cougars’ next offensive possession started with a first down, but Campbellsport wasn’t able to capitalize on the positive start to the drive.
“Carter at quarterback gave us a little extra in the run game, and that’s something we’ll continue to look at and work on,” said Head Coach Todd Wondra.
Mayville scored a one-yard rushing touchdown from Landen Baker to take a 7-0 lead over the Cougars at 8:45 in the second quarter.
Campbellsport got a pass play from Jackson Straub to Wyatt Loehr for 14 yards to move the Cougars’ drive forward before the drive was stopped by the Cardinals’ defense.
“We played pretty good football right out of the game, and we matched their physicality in the first half,” said Wondra. “We were a block away on multiple plays in that first half of breaking some big plays, but I think they wore us down as we hit the second half.”
The Cardinals scored on a 30-yard rushing touchdown from their quarterback, Emerson Mittelstadt, with 2:43 left in the half to take a 14-0 lead.
Gellings got a six-yard rush on third down to get a first down for the Cougars early in the third quarter before the Cardinals got the ball and proceeded to add a field goal with 5:04 in the third quarter for a 17-0 Mayville lead.
Mayville scored their final touchdown at the 9:52 mark in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard passing touchdown on fourth down for a 24-0 lead over Campbellsport.
Campbellsport was able to drive to the Mayville 34-yard line thanks to two Blake Heltemes’ first downs before the Cardinals stopped the Cougars’ final opportunity in the game.
“We’ll continue to work on us this week and keep fighting,” said Wondra. “These kids continue to work hard and give us their best.”
Campbellsport football will host NFDL for homecoming on September 26 at 7 p.m.
