On September 5, Campbellsport football lost 35-8 to rival Lomira in their conference opener on the road.
Campbellsport (1-2, 0-1) attempted an onside kick to start the game, but the kick was recovered by Lomira (3-0, 1-0) at their own 49-yard line.
Lomira scored a one-yard rushing touchdown to finish off their 51-yard line to take a 7-0 lead with 8:02 in the first quarter.
The Cougars went three-and-out on their first offensive possession of the game before Lomira scored on their next offensive possession with a two-yard rushing touchdown to give the Lions a 14-0 lead at the 3:14 mark in the first quarter.
Campbellsport had two more offensive possessions prior to the Lions scoring their third touchdown in the second quarter to put the score at 21-0 in favor of Lomira with 1:49 left in the half.
Cayden Flasch provided a spark for the Cougars with a 38-yard kick return to give Campbellsport a good starting field position at the Lomira 40-yard line.
The Cougars were stopped on fourth down on the drive, but the Campbellsport defense came up with a big play when Carter Gellings intercepted the Lions’ pass and gave the ball back to the Cougars’ offense at the Lomira 33-yard line.
Campbellsport’s offense wasn’t able to take advantage of the good field position before halftime, leaving the score at 21-0 with the Lions holding the halftime lead.
The Cougars’ first drive was stopped by the Lomira defense, but the Campbellsport defense responded with their own defensive stop, highlighted by Gellings almost securing his second interception of the night.
Trent Schladweiler took the punt back for a 28-yard return, giving the Cougars the ball at their own 48-yard line, and they got a Gellings 12-yard rush to set up Jackson Straub, rushing to a first down on fourth down.
Straub connected with Schladweiler on a nice pass play down the field, beating the Lomira secondary for 39 yards, and getting the ball to the Lions’ one-yard line.
“The throw to Trent was a good read by Jackson, and he made a good throw,” said Head Coach Todd Wondra. “ They were playing aggressively up front, and we were able to capitalize on it there.”
“Unfortunately, there just wasn’t enough of those types of plays, and we fell to a good football team,” said Wondra.
Campbellsport was able to get into the end zone, thanks to Straub finding his way for a one-yard rushing touchdown, and Gellings converted a dash into the end zone for two points to close the gap on the scoreboard to 21-8 with 3:11 on the third-quarter clock.
“After the two-point conversion, we got it to a two-score game and thought we could fight our way back into the game, but they just wore us down with the size up front and stuck with their run game,” said Wondra.
Lomira’s offense responded with a touchdown on their next possession to extend their lead to 28-8 at the 8:05 mark in the fourth quarter.
The Cougars’ offense wasn’t able to continue their momentum on the next drive, which ended with an interception by the Lomira defense.
Lomira scored their final touchdown with 2:13 left in the game, making the final score 35-8, with the Lions taking home the conference victory.
“This was a huge rivalry game for us. Nothing comes easy in the Flyway Conference, and you’re tested every week,” said Wondra. “This group of kids never gives up, and they’ll continue to work hard and fight until the final whistle, and that’s all you can ask of any team.”
