On November 19, Campbellsport girls’ basketball started their season with a 56-43 loss to Ozaukee in the first game of the Ray La Batte coaching era at Campbellsport.
Campbellsport’s (0-1) Josie Twohig made a long two pointer to make the score 5-4, in favor of Ozaukee, (1-0) early in the first half.
Kiera Laverenz hit a jumper at the 11:21 mark in the first half to stop a 6-0 Indians’ run with Ozaukee holding an 11-6 lead.
The Cougars got a three pointer at the top of the key from Hadlee Rohlfs with 7:52 on the first half clock to make the score 17-11 in favor of the Indians.
Twohig had a nice steal with her full-court defense which led to a basket, followed by two baskets by Ava Sabish to give Campbellsport a nice 6-0 run with the score 22-17 for Ozaukee holding the lead.
The Indians went on a 5-0 run to end the first half for a halftime score of 27-17 in favor of Ozaukee.
Campbellsport got two baskets from Laverenz to put the score at 33-23 with the Indians leading at the 14:54 mark in the second half.
Ozaukee pushed their lead out to 47-28 with 5:38 left in the game before the Cougars’ defensive pressure led by Gabi Danza got them back in the game.
Mackenzie Helsell scored five straight points, including a three pointer, and then Sabish scored two consecutive hoops to close the gap to 49-38.
Rohlfs hit another three pointer in the corner for the Cougars to get Campbellsport within nine points (50-41) with 2:03 left in the game.
Campbellsport’s comeback wasn’t able to finish the job in the final two minutes, with the final score being 56-43 in favor of Ozaukee.
The Cougars were led by 12 points from Sabish and eight points for Rohlfs in the non-conference matchup.
“We had a tough loss against Ozaukee in our first game but we have seen consistent growth from each practice in our team with the players showing up everyday and looking to get better than they were the day before,” said Head Coach Ray La Batte.
