On December 3, Campbellsport girls’ basketball beat Mayville 52-48 in the Flyway Conference opener for both teams.
Mayville (1-4, 0-1) held an early 6-2 lead over Campbellsport (2-3, 1-0) before Kiera Laverenz scored two straight baskets for the Cougars to tie the score at six.
The Cardinals got their lead back to 12-8 before another basket from Laverenz to cut the Mayville lead back to two points.
Mayville continued to lead the game before back-to-back baskets by Mackenzie Helsell and Ava Sabish made the score 16-14 in favor of the Cardinals.
Gabi Danza closed the gap even further with a nice layup to make the score 18-17 with Mayville in the lead.
The Cardinals closed the half with a 5-0 run to go into the halftime break with a 23-17 lead over the Cougars.
Mayville scored the first two points of the second half before Brittany Reilly went on a personal 9-0 scoring spree for the Cougars, featuring two strong post finishes and an offensive rebound putback to give Campbellsport a 26-25 lead.
Reilly and Helsell each scored a basket to keep Campbellsport ahead30-29beforetheCardinals went on a 10-4 scoring run to put Mayville back ahead in the game with the score at 39-34 at the nine-minute mark in the second half.
Campbellsport responded with their grit and toughness by scoring 10 straight points, highlighted by three pointers from Sabish and Hadlee Rohlfs to give the Cougars a 44-39 lead.
Reilly continued her strong night for the Cougars by scoring two more baskets to keep Campbellsport ahead of Mayville with the score at 48-43 with less than two minutes left in the game.
The Cougars were able to close out the game on the free throw line by all nine attempts in the second half with two makes apiece from Sabish and Laverenz in the final minute to preserve the 52-48 conference victory over Mayville for the first time since 2019.
“The girls showed their toughness and togetherness as a team by beating their conference rival in our growing process as a team,” said Head Coach Ray La Batte.
Campbellsport’s Flyway Conference win was their first conference win since returning to the Flyway in the 2021-22 season and broke their streak of 60 straight conference losses since 2020.
Brittany Reilly had 19 points and 12 rebounds on the night and Kiera Laverenz added 12 points to lead the Cougars to their conference victory.
At Sheboygan South
On December 5, Campbellsport girls’ basketball lost 61-41 to Sheboygan South in their first game on the road.
Campbellsport (2-3) got out to an early 4-2 lead over Sheboygan South (1-0) after a Kiera Laverenz basket.
The Redwings went on an 18-2 run before Ava Sabish made a three pointer for the Cougars to make the score 20-9 with four minutes on the first-half clock.
Sheboygan South closed the half with a 10-2 scoring advantage to make the halftime score 30-11 in favor of the Redwings.
Campbellsport got a three pointer from Mackenzie Helsell which was followed by baskets from Sabish and Laverenz in their attempt to get back into the game in the second half with the score at 48-24.
The Cougars continued their second half effort with a Brianna Bobb offensive rebound putback and a Sabish three pointer to close the gap to 49-29.
The two teams traded points in the closing stretch of the second half with the Cougars going home with a 61-41 nonconference loss on the road.
Campbellsport girls’ basketball traveled to WLA on December 10 and host Omro on December 13 with the game tipping off at 7 p.m.
