On August 4, Campbellsport baseball lost 7-6 to Seymour, but still advanced to the Class AA American Legion Baseball State Championship game on Tuesday night.
Seymour (17-3) held a 4-0 lead in the third inning, when Campbellsport (15-6) got the bases loaded with zero outs in the bottom of the third inning.
The Cougars scored four runs after loading bases, featuring a Brody Nolan RBI single and a Tyler Sachen two-run double to tie the game at four after three innings.
Campbellsport got the bases loaded again in the fourth inning but weren’t able to get a run across home plate due to hitting into a double play to end the inning, leaving the game tied at four.
Seymour scored a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth inning to retake the lead at 7-4 before the Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a Nolan RBI double and Jace Goebel's RBI single to tighten the game at 7-6.
Campbellsport wasn’t able to score in the seventh inning, ending their perfect record in the tournament, but the Cougars advanced to play in the championship game on Tuesday night against the winner of the Seymour and Beaver Dam. (Tuesday’s game results after the paper was published).
Vs Beaver Dam
On August 3, Campbellsport baseball beat Beaver Dam 6-1 to stay perfect in their first three games of the state tournament.
Campbellsport (15-6) got the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the second inning, which resulted in five runs in the inning highlighted by a Jace Goebel two-run RBI single and a Tyler Sachen two-run RBI double to center field to give the Cougars a commanding 5-0 lead over Beaver Dam (18-5).
Beaver Dam got the bases loaded in the third inning with only one out against them, but they were only able to score one run in that high leverage situation to putting the score 5-1 in favor of the Cougars.
The Cougars tacked on another run in the fifth inning thanks to Cullen Reis’ RBI single to push Campbellsport to a lead of 6-1.
Campbellsport’s pitching duo of the Kohlmann brothers of Riley and Gage held Beaver Dam at bay for the final innings with combining to strike out ten batters to secure the 6-1 victory.
“Riley had an outstanding performance on the mound with eight strikeouts in six innings,” said Campbellsport Coaches Dave Bothe and Gary Goebel.
Vs Onalaska
On August 2, Campbellsport baseball beat Onalaska 11-1 in five innings in the second round of the state tournament to advance into the winners’ bracket of the tournament.
Onalaska (17-8-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning over Campbellsport (15-6), but the Cougars responded in a big way in the second inning by scoring six runs.
The Cougars’ six-run inning was started by a leadoff triple by Braden Bothe and then highlighted by two-run RBI doubles from Trent Schladweiler and Brody Nolan to take a 6-1 lead after two innings.
Campbellsport scored two more runs in the fourth inning after facing two outs in the inning, which featured a RBI double by Tyler Sachen to extend their lead to 8-1 over Onalaska.
The Cougars got the bases loaded twice in the fifth inning, capped off by Sachen’s two-run RBI single to finish off the 11-1 victory in five innings.
Campbellsport was led on the mound by Owen Bong, pitching five innings to complement the Cougars to advance in the state tournament.
“Owen led things off on the bump and Ty provided the pop in the lineup with three RBIs,” said Goebel and Bothe. “ Overall, the team had patience at the plate with collecting ten hits to go along with seven walks.”
At New London
On August 1, Campbellsport baseball beat New London 4-3 in the first round of the Class AA American Legion baseball tournament in New London.
Campbellsport (15-6) got on the scoreboard in the second inning thanks to Cullen Reis’s Sac Fly to take a 1-0 lead over New London (14-10).
Trent Schladweiler led off the third inning with a triple, then was driven in by a Kyler Bowe RBI single to extend their lead to 2-0 over New London.
The Cougars’ offense was done in the third inning when Brody Nolan hit a RBI triple to push the lead to 3-0 after three innings.
New London tightened up the game in the fourth inning by scoring two runs, making the score 3-2 in favor of Campbellsport.
Campbellsport scored a run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to put the score at 4-2 to give starting pitcher Braden Bothe the support he needed on the mound to take the two-run lead into the seventh inning.
New London got the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, but only got one run across the plate before Gage Kohlmann closed out the 4-3 victory for the Cougars.
“Braden was dominant on the mound for us,” said Goebel and Bothe.
