Campbellsport Legion Baseball Class AA State Champions

Posted

On August 5, Campbellsport baseball beat Seymour 12-11 in the Class AA American Legion State Tournament in New London to win the Class AA state championship.
Campbellsport (16-6) took control in the first inning over Seymour (18-4) by scoring nine runs in the opening inning.
“We came out hot during the championship game against Seymour, scoring 9 runs in the first inning, then adding to it in the third,” said Campbellsport coaches Dave Bothe, Gary Goebel, and Jack McCarty. “Seymour did not give up, chipping away at the lead.”
The Cougars scored six runs before Seymour could record an out in the inning, featuring RBI singles by Brody Nolan, Tyler Sachen, Cullen Reis, and Trent Schladweiler for Campbellsport.

Campbellsport was able to load the bases with one out in the first inning, which resulted in three more runs, highlighted by Sachen’s second single of the inning and driving in two runs on his base hit, ballooning the Cougars’ lead to 9-0 when the first inning ended.
The Cougars tacked on a run in the third inning when Riley Kohlmann got an RBI single to give Campbellsport a 10-0 lead over Seymour.
Seymour showed some life in the fourth inning by scoring three runs to put the score at 10-3 in favor of the Cougars, and continued their momentum in the fifth inning by getting the bases loaded, which allowed Seymour to score three more runs to close the gap a little more with the score at 10-6 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Campbellsport got a double from Sachen in the bottom of the fifth inning, bringing Braden Bothe up to the plate.
Bothe blasted a two-run home run over the right field fence, giving some more breathing room for Campbellsport, extending their lead to 12-6 over Seymour.
“Braden collected three hits, including a monumental home run in the fifth inning,” said Bothe, Goebel, and McCarty
The two runs scored by the Cougars in the fifth inning were much needed because Seymour proceeded to score five runs in the top of the sixth inning to tighten up the game at 12-11, with Campbellsport holding the one-run lead to set up a dramatic seventh inning for the championship.
Seymour was able to get the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh inning, with an opportunity to tie or take the lead in the title game matchup.
Gage Kohlmann was able to save the game on the mound with support from his defense by forcing a fly out to shortstop with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to clinch the Class AA state championship for Campbellsport.
“It takes solid pitching to win a championship with our top three starting pitchers, Braden Bothe, Owen Bong, Riley Kohlmann, and our solid closer Gage Kohlmann, with contributions from Cullen Reis, Kyler Bowe, Trent Schaldweiler, Zach Zimdahl, and Jace Goebel,” said Bothe, Goebel, and McCarty.
“Timely hitting, solid defense, and strong, consistent pitching were the key to winning these games,” said Bothe, Goebel, and McCarty. “We could not be prouder of every player.”
It was an impressive team effort throughout the five days of the state tournament, with the team going 4-1 to claim the title, with team members Tyler Sachen (named top hitter of the tournament), Braden Bothe, Brody Nolan, and Riley Kohlmann being named to the all-tournament team.
“The boys went 4-1 against some tough competition, including a thrilling win over last year’s defending state champions,” said Bothe, Goebel, and McCarty. “Their grit, teamwork, and determination were on full display every step of the way.”
“We were fortunate to have been provided with a bat boy (Brantley) from New London for the experience,” said Bothe, Goebel, and McCarty. “He added to the dynamic and formed a great bond with the team, and spent his 11th birthday in the dugout with the team.”
“The New London Legion made this experience memorable with opening ceremonies, the historic diamond built with stone walls in 1935, the unique dugouts that enhance player involvement, and the bat boy,” said Bothe, Goebel, and McCarty.
“From game one through the championship, the energy of the team was top-notch. It was impressive to see those who followed the game online or through GameChanger, even if they could not make the journey to New London,” said Bothe, Goebel, and McCarty.”
“We want to give a big shoutout to the amazing fans, those who made the trip to New London, and those cheering from back home.” Bothe, Goebel, and McCarty. “Your support means the world to these athletes and has helped carry them through the big moments.”
