Girls Varsity Takes Seventh at Menasha
The Lady Cougar wrestlers went to Menasha to compete in the 21-team tournament and ended up taking seventh. Two girls brought home hardware.
At 114 pounds, Irelyn Woolhether had 11 girls in her bracket and won her first four matches by pin to earn a berth in the finals where she fell to 11th-ranked Adalyn Raue of Hustisford by fall and settled for second. Irelyn battled tough and was only down 6-3 with a minute left before being put to her back.
Emma Batzler wrestled at 126 and had 17 girls in her bracket. After winning her first two matches by pin, she was up against 12th-ranked Anna Behling of Bayport. After giving up a quick takedown, Batzler scored the next 12 points before pinning Behling. In the semis, Emma went up against ninth-ranked Hannah Huza of Hortonville, who ended up beating Batzler 15-0. Emma bounced back in the third place match and pinned returning state qualifier Maya Kirchner of Hartford in the second period. Huza would go on to win the tournament knocking off the secondranked kid in the state 6-5. Mya Schraufnagel wrestled at 132 and had 18 girls in her bracket. She won her pool and that put her against fifthranked Chesney Bartoszek of Wrightstown in the quarterfinals where she would lose by fall. Mya bounced back by pinning two very solid opponents the next two rounds to earn a very respectful fifth place.
Abigail Ksioszk wrestled at 126 and went 2-2 with a pin and a 13-6 decision to finish in 10th place. Emersen Wissink went 1-3 at 126 and finished in 13th place. Both girls showed grit as they both had matches where they were losing (7-0 and 7-2) and battled back to beat their opponents.
All the girls keep improving every week.
