Indians Fastpitch Starts 4-0 in Conference Play

Posted

The Kewaskum Indians varsity fastpitch softball team has come out of the gate with four straight conference wins to start the season. The conference is shaping up to be a real dog fight of a year with Winneconne, Plymouth, Kettle Moraine Lutheran, and Waupun all having very veteran rosters and a boatload of talent. Kewaskum softball came out ready to battle and came out of the first two weeks unscathed.
At Plymouth
Gale Grahn Field in Plymouth was a house of horror last year for the Lady Indians, but the Kewaskum bats would not let this year be the same as the last as they pounded out a season-high 15 hits, which led to 12 runs, to secure the victory. Seven Indian sluggers, Lauren Rettler, Julia Prochnow, Ellie Calliari, Brianna Krause, Maddyn Sabish, Izzy Wollner, and Macy Sabish, all had multiple hits.
Plymouth stayed in the game with nine hits of their own, but Kewaskum helped them out by committing four errors on defense. The fourth inning appeared to be the turning point in the game. Nursing a 7-5 lead after a Plymouth home run, Bri Donner, the Pumas’ number-three hitter, laced a deep, line drive into left center with a runner on. In the play of the game, senior centerfielder Lauren Rettler got a bead on it and made a diving catch on the warning track and had the wherewithal to find her balance after somersaulting to fire a laser to second base, keeping a base runner at first base, killing all momentum the Pumas had. Plymouth’s first base coach told Lauren at the end of the game that it “was the best catch he has ever seen.”
The top of the seventh saw the Indians put four insurance runs on the board, which proved to be the difference.

Freshman Maddyn Sabish led the way offensively with three hits, including a double. Macy Sabish and Ellie Calliari also doubled in the game. Calliari and Brianna Krause each drove in four runs.
Macy Sabish gutted out seven strong innings giving up only two earned runs while striking out seven Pumas.
Vs KML
In another gritty, gutty, cold weather game, the Indians pounded nine hits while committing zero errors to put another conference win on the board. Macy Sabish, who went the distance on the mound, slammed the door shut in the top of the seventh inning, striking out three batters in the inning. More impressively, the game ended with Sabish striking out KML star Makenzie Luehring to end the game. Luehring came into the game batting .727 and had struck out once all season. On the 122nd pitch of the night, and a 2-2 count, Macy dug deep and hurled a fastball that Luehring’s bat did not connect with to seal the deal for the home team Indians.
The Kewaskum bats stayed warm as Macy Sabish, Maya Beistle, Millie Kreif, Maddyn Sabish, Brianna Krause, Ellie Calliari, and Lauren Rettler all recorded hits. Rettler and Krause each had two hits.
The offense scored the winning run in the fifth inning by playing textbook, fundamentally sound, ball. Maddyn Sabish led the inning off with a single. Millie Kreif laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move Sabish to second base. Izzy Wollner made a productive out by grounding to second base which advanced Sabish to third. With two outs, Maya Beistle hit a sharp ground ball up the middle that made its way to the center fielder, scoring Sabish, which turned out to be the game winning RBI.
Macy Sabish pitched seven impressive innings against a very good hitting KML team, and the defense supported her with error-free defense. Sabish struck out 10 Chargers while allowing only two walks and six hits.
This week, Kewaskum played Monday night against Chilton, and then they travel to Waupun on Thursday, April 17 for a 4:45 p.m. game
