Kewaskum Girls Soccer
The Kewaskum girls’ varsity soccer team had a busy week last week.
They traveled to Kettle Moraine Lutheran on Tuesday, April 22.
Both teams came out hard, but the Chargers were able to score one in the first half to give them the advantage going into halftime.
The Indians had some good opportunities to score throughout the game, but struggled to connect the ball with the back of the net.
The Chargers were able to score another goal in the second half and walked away with a 2-0 victory over the Indians.
Despite the loss, Coach Luke Piwani was pleased with the defense’s ability to limit quality looks for the Chargers and plans on continuing to work on possessing the ball from the defense through the midfield and up to the offense.
A key player in this game was senior Emily Melzer. Coach Piwani stated, “Emily was all over the field today. She helped shore up the defense when needed and provided a spark up top by getting behind the defense a couple of times. Her speed can really impact a game.”
Play continued for the Indians at home on Thursday, April 24, against Shorewood.
The game was off to a quick start when Shorewood managed to score goals in the fourth and ninth minutes giving them a 2-0 advantage right off the bat.
The Indians battled hard to prevent Shorewood from scoring for the remainder of the half, but Shorewood was able to score their third goal shortly after the second half began.
The final score was 3-0 in favor of Shorewood.
Coach Piwani commented on Shorewood’s ability to possess the ball and emphasized that the Indians will work on finding ways to keep putting on pressure and playing team soccer.
He was pleased with the performance of junior defender Jadelyn Stoltzmann and commented, “Jadelyn had another good game at left defender. She has been solid all season and works to distribute the ball to her teammates from the back.”
The week concluded with a cold game in Port Washington on Friday, April 25. According to Coach Piwani, the Indians came out a bit flat and their play in the first half was not what they wanted it to be.
Port Washington took advantage of this, and put three goals on the board before halftime. The Indians came out with more intensity in the second half, but it wasn’t enough, and Port was able to score one more time making the final score 4-0.
Coach Piwani stated, “Ruth Sadownikow and Kaylee Flood had nice games today. Their intensity really set the tone in the second half, and you could see it spread to the team. They helped provide a nice lift for us.”
Throughout the game, the Indians were able to take eight shots on goal while Port Washington was limited to six. Coach Piwani is hopeful that the Indians’ offense will begin to find ways to capitalize on their opportunities.
The girls played Monday night against Brown Deer. They will end the week with a home game against WLA at 6:45 p.m.
