On December 4, Campbellsport boys lost 57-51 to Laconia in a competitive matchup to open conference play.
Campbellsport (0-2, 0-1) jumped out to an 11-8 lead over Laconia (2-0, 1-0), thanks to a Noah Bobb three-pointer.
The Cougars held a 14-12 lead at the ten-minute mark when Trevin Shea knocked a three-pointer for Campbellsport.
Laconia went on a 14-2 scoring run before Shea drained his third three-pointer of the first half to put the score at 26-19 in favor of the Spartans.
Cullen Reis made a three-pointer for the Cougars for a halftime score of 35-22 with Laconia in the lead.
Campbellsport’s defense took control early in the second half to allow the Cougars’ offense to make some shots to tighten up the gap on the scoreboard, featuring seven consecutive points from Carter Gellings and three more points from Shea for a 38-33 score at the 8:40 mark in the second half.
Gellings went through the entire Spartans’ defense for two points to bring the Cougars back in the game at 43-36 in favor of Laconia with seven minutes left in the game.
Laconia held a 48-38 lead when Gellings knocked down two three-pointers from the corner, sandwiched by a tough finish by Maustin Gruber, to tighten up the game at 48-46 with the Spartans in the lead at 4:45 on the second-half clock.
The Cougars were able to claw closer at 51-50 with two minutes left after Gellings scored on a nice cut to the basket and knocked down two free throws.
Campbellsport’s defense forced a turnover, allowing the Cougars the opportunity to take the lead, but the shot off the corner rimmed out with a minute left.
Laconia hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the 57-51 conference victory over the Cougars.
Carter Gellings led Campbellsport with 23 points in the conference matchup.
“We had a strong second-half comeback after being down 13 points, and we had it down to a one-possession game, but we came up short,” said Head Coach Ethan Elliott.
Vs Howards Grove
On December 2, the Campbellsport boys’ basketball team lost 68-50 to Howards Grove in their season opener at home.
Carter Gellings got the scoring started for Campbellsport (0-2) with a three-pointer from the wing to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead over Howards Grove (1-0).
The Tigers proceeded to go on a 16-3 scoring run to take a 16-6 lead before the Cougars responded with their own 10-2 run, highlighted by two three-pointers from Trevin Shea, to tighten the game at 18-16.
Howards Grove finished off the first half with a scoring stretch of 16-2 over the final seven minutes of the half to take a 34-18 lead into the halftime break.
Campbellsport closed the gap on the scoreboard to 41-30 when Deacon Cousert drained a three-pointer at the top of the key.
The Cougars continued to claw back into the game, thanks to eight consecutive points from Gellings, which featured two three-pointers from the corner to put the score at 48-38 in favor of the Tigers.
Shea was able to make two straight nice turnaround baskets in the lane for the Cougars to make the score 52-43 with Howards Grove leading with 5:30 left on the game clock.
The Tigers pulled away in the final minutes of the game to secure a 68-50 non-conference victory over the Cougars.
Trevin Shea scored 14 points, and Carter Gellings scored 13 points to lead the Cougars in the contest.
Campbellsport boys basketball traveled to Winnebago Lutheran Academy on December 9, after print time. The Cougars will host Lomira on December 12 at 7 p.m.
