Campbellsport Boys Basketball Defeats Falcons in First Round

Posted

On March 4, Campbellsport boys’ basketball beat the nine-seed Sheboygan Falls 57-48 in the first round of the Division 3 WIAA Tournament.
The eight-seed Cougars from Campbellsport (7-19) were ahead 9-8 of Sheboygan Falls (10-15) when Carter Gellings knocked down a three-pointer to extend their lead to 12-8.
The Cougars got another Gellings three-pointer from the corner and a nice cut to the basket from Noah Bobb, who was assisted on the basket with a nice pass from Gellings to increase the Cougars’ lead to 17-10, which led the Falcons coach to call a timeout with 5:06 on the first-half clock.
Bobb had a nice, quick release on this three-point shot, which didn’t allow time for Sheboygan Falls’ defense to close out on his shot, which splashed through the net to give Campbellsport a 20-13 lead.

The Falcons got hot from the three-point line to finish the half on an 11-3 run to take a 24-23 lead into the halftime break between the two teams.
Campbellsport’s Emmett Gonnering and Jace Goebel combined to score six points early in the second half to tie the game at 29 when Gellings made his third three-pointer of the game off the bench to retake a 32-29 lead for the Cougars.
“Carter was huge for us off the bench with his shot, energizing the team,” said Head Coach Ethan Elliott.
Bobb had a nice drive for a layup and Goebel used good body control to finish in the lane to increase the Cougars’ lead to 36-32 over the Falcons.
The Cougars received a back-cut layup from Luke Pendowski, which was followed by an Owen Bong three-pointer to energize the home crowd with a 45-39 lead in favor of Campbellsport.
Sheboygan Falls cut the Cougars’ lead to one point at 45-44 before Goebel scored four consecutive points in the paint to push the Campbellsport lead back to 49-44 with less than four minutes left in the game.
Campbellsport got a Bobb basket to increase their lead back to 51-45 before the Falcons hit a three to make the score 51-48 in favor of the Cougars with 2:50 on the game clock.
The Cougars’ defense and aggressive offensive rebounding helped Campbellsport close out the final two minutes of the game from the free-throw line, sealing the game by making enough free throws at the end to get the 57-48 first-round win to advance to the second-round.
“Defensively, we stayed the course, which wore them down late in the game, and I was proud of our physicality with the way we finished off possessions on the defensive end, with Luke being a big part of it by making life difficult on their best guard,” said Elliott. “The game was a credit to this group’s commitment and desire to be playing their best basketball when March arrived.”
Jace Goebel’s 15 points and Noah Bobb’s 13 points paced the Cougars in their home tournament win.
At Laconia
On March 7, Campbellsport boys’ basketball lost 64-45 to top-seed Laconia in the second round of the Division 3 WIAA tournament.
Campbellsport (7-19) trailed 15-6 to Flyway Conference foe Laconia (21-4) after Jace Goebel and Carter Gellings hit three-pointers for the Cougars.
The Cougars got baskets from Gellings and Luke Pendowski to make the halftime score 30-12 in favor of the Spartans.
Laconia had a 38-12 lead early in the second half before the Cougars went on an impressive 15-1 scoring run, featuring Emmett Gonnering scoring nine points, which was combined with Pendowski scoring the other six points with a corner three-pointer and a hustle steal on defense resulting in an old-fashion three-point play, to make the score 39-27.
The Campbellsport run was followed by a Laconia 10-0 scoring stretch, which was stopped by a Braden Bothe splash from the three-point line for a 49-30 score.
The Cougars continued to battle in the game by connecting on three more shots from deep, featuring a Connor Waldschmidt three-pointer to cap off Campbellsport’s scoring on the night with the score at 59-45 in favor of Laconia.
The Spartans scored the final five points of the game for the 64-45 playoff victory over the visiting Cougars.
Emmett Gonnering led the Cougars with 11 points in his final game as a Cougar.
