On December 30, Campbellsport boys basketball beat Sheboygan Falls 68-62 on the road in their non-conference matchup, for their third win in their last four games.

Sheboygan Falls (4-5) led 20-18 before Campbellsport (3-6) went on a 17-0 run to take a 35-20 lead into the halftime break.

The Cougars’ defensive intensity amped up after Luke Pendowski dove on the floor to create a steal and Trevin Shea scored eight points off the bench with two three-pointers and a fast-break layup during their 17-0 scoring run before halftime.

“You could feel the energy shift when Luke, one of our senior captains, was willing to give up his body for the team,” said Head Coach Ethan Elliott. “Trevin really took advantage of his minutes with using his length on defense and hitting shots.”

Campbellsport was able to maintain their firsthalf lead making nine three-pointers as a team in the game which translated into a 68-62 victory on the road to close out 2024 for the Cougars.

“This group has really started playing for each other when there are four guys in double figures with different players stepping up at different times in the game,” said Elliott. “When we play together then everyone becomes a lot more confident in their role with us. We need to continue to build on it in the new year.”

“I’m proud of the way the team came out to get the job done,” said Elliott. “Winning on the road isn’t easy especially during the holiday break.”

Noah Bobb led Campbellsport with 15 points, Emmett Gonnering adding 12 points, and Owen Bong and Jace Goebel each scoring 11 points in the non-conference victory.

At Xavier

On January 4, Campbellsport boys basketball lost 73-47 to Xavier in their non-conference matchup on the road.

Campbellsport (3-6) had a 6-4 lead over Xavier (8-3) after a Jace Goebel three-pointer for the Cougars.

The Cougars got an old-fashioned, three-point play from Goebel and a Noah Bobb three-pointer off an offensive rebound by Goebel to put the score at 19-16 in favor of Xavier.

Xavier scored eight straight points before an Emmett Gonnering basket and another Bobb three-pointer to make the score 27-21 with Xavier in the lead.

Gonnering scored the next 11 points for the Cougars in the first half before Bobb scored off an offensive rebound to make the score, with Xavier leading, 43-34 at the halftime break.

Xavier had a 48-36 lead early in the second half before Goebel scored a basket, which was a result of good ball movement for the Cougars, and Luke Pendowski sprinted down the court for a fastbreak layup to cut the lead down to eight points with the score at 48-40.

Carter Gellings got a steal for the Cougars and took the ball strong to the hoop for two points, plus he was fouled which resulted in three points for Campbellsport to make the score 55-43 with nine minutes left in the game.

Campbellsport wasn’t able to get any closer in the non-conference matchup with Xavier taking home the victory with a score of 73-47.

Emmett Gonnering lead the Cougars with 17 points in the afternoon matchup.

Campbellsport boys basketball will travel to Winnebago Lutheran Academy on January 7 and to Mayville on January 10, with game times scheduled for 7 p.m.
