Eight Cougar wrestlers competed at the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament on February 27, 28, and March 1.
Senior Brock Bentz made a good run at the podium at 285 but fell one match short. Brock pinned his first opponent from Fennimore, Dalton Wolf, (39-15) in 3:00. In the quarterfinals, he lost 10-0 to Jack Simmons of Prairie du Chein (48-10). Simmons finished second at state. In his first wrestle back, he pinned Danny Ellifson (21-8) of Jefferson in 2:07. In the consolation semis, Brock needed a win to get to the podium, however, he ended up getting pinned by Aiden Isaacson of Mondovi/Eleva-Strum (48-9) in 2:58. Brock finished the season with a 41-10 record and a career record of 99-35.
No other Cougars won a match at state.
At 106, sophomore Logan Knoeck lost his opening matches 19-4 to Levi Schwartz of WLA (34-9) and to Owen Dorshorst (51-7) of Lodi 17-0. Dorshorst took fifth.
At 113, junior Jacob Allickson lost to Easton Felchlin (45-12) of Wrightstown 17-2. Felchlin took fifth. Allickson then lost to Bentley Nowak (44-11) of Coleman 12-2. Nowak took sixth.
At 144, junior Gavin Pickering lost to Louis Hock (41-11) of Wrightstown by pin in 1:43. Hock took third. Pickering then lost to Trig White (38-5) Chetek-Weyer/Prairie Farm by pin in 1:57. White took sixth.
At 150 pounds, sophomore Erich Cappozzo lost to Trey Zemke (21-5) of Winneconne 5-1. He lost his second match to Isaac Dunnom (44-17) of Osceola by a 15-2 major decision.
At 165 pounds, senior Conner Sitzberger lost his first match by fall in 3:11 to Hunter Burr (32-12) of Martin Luther. In his second match, he lost to Jakob Luchterhand (47-12) of Neilsville/Greenwood/Loyal by fall in 2:48. Conner finished his career with a 71-28 record.
At 175 pounds, junior Porter Klotz lost to Landon Heitmeier (38-8) of Portage 16-0. Heitmeier took fourth. Klotz then lost a nail-biter in his second match to Blake Nelson (33-10) of Ellsworth 12-11.
On the girls’ side, sophomore Irelyn Woolhether lost her first match to Kylie Klum (38-7) of Westby by a 10-1 major decision. Klum took fourth. She then lost to Tessa Marrero (41-11) of New Berlin West/East by fall in 2:22. Woolhether was the second girl in CHS history to qualify for state.
