On October 4, Campbellsport beat Laconia 7-0 on the road in their conference battle.
The two teams traded punts on their first offensive possessions to start the game.
Campbellsport’s (5-2, 3-2) running game behind Riley Kohlmann, Chris Taddey, Blake Heltemes and Trent Schladweiler drove the ball 60 yards to the Laconia 25-yard line before quarterback Braden Bothe threw an interception to end the Cougars’ promising drive.
Laconia (2-5, 0-5) had a nice drive of their own for 41 yards before the Campbellsport defense stood up by stopping the Spartans on the fourth down with 9:57 in the second quarter.
The Cougars went three and out on their next possession before punting the ball back to the Spartans.
The Spartans had a nice drive of 34 yards going before a holding penalty then two tackles for losses, one by defensive lineman Armaedo Rodriguez and another by linebacker Heltemes, stopped Laconia’s offense in their tracks.
“I thought the defense stepped up to the challenge tonight for us by playing well,” said Head Coach Todd Wondra. “We had multiple guys have good games for us and we were able to hold their offense in check.”
Campbellsport got the ball back at their own 26yard line and were facing a third and seven when the Spartans got called for a personal foul facemask penalty giving the Cougars new life on their drive.
The Cougars put their new offensive life to good use when Bothe hit Luke Pendowski on a pass across the middle which resulted in Pendowski breaking two Spartan attempted tackles and spinning free to sprint into the end zone for a 39-yard touchdown with 1:06 left in the first half to give Campbellsport a 7-0 lead.
“The passing touchdown to Luke late in the first half proved to be the difference in the game with Braden putting the ball on Luke. After that, it was an athlete making a play and taking it into the end zone,” said Wondra.
Campbellsport’s defense didn’t allow the Spartans to do anything on their final drive of the first half to keep the score 7-0 in favor of the Cougars.
Laconia’s first drive of the second half was over seven minutes resulting in 42 yards to set up a 48yard field goal attempt which was wide right of the goal post to keep the score 7-0 with a 4:18 on the third quarter clock.
The Cougars’ offense chewed up almost six minutes of the game clock with their running game before Campbellsport was stopped on fourth down at the Spartans’ 45-yard line.
Campbellsport’s defense responded by stopping the Laconia offense on fourth down at the Cougars’ 40-yard line.
The Spartans would get one more opportunity with 2:05 left in the game after the teams traded punts, but the Cougars defense came up with another fourth down stop caused by heavy pressure from their defensive line to secure the 7-0 conference victory.
“I thought we had some younger guys step up to the challenge with not much varsity experience this week by playing alright,” said Wondra.
