Campbellsport Girls Basketball Shows Promise on Youth Night

On December 30, the Campbellsport girls’ basketball team lost 55-51 to New Holstein after leading the entire game until the final minute on Youth Night.
Campbellsport (1-10) took an 11-9 lead over New Holstein (4-7) thanks to a three-pointer from Ellie Heider and a basket from Kiera Laverenz at the 10:30 mark in the first half.

The Cougars extended their lead to 24-15 over the Huskies, highlighted by another three-pointer from Heider and four points from Brianna Bobb.
Taylor Schladweiler scored right before halftime to give Campbellsport a 26-19 lead at the break.

Laverenz got the Cougars going in the second half with a basket to expand their lead to 28-19 before New Holstein tied the game at 28, but Campbellsport responded with Brittany Reilly’s basket and Heider knocking down her third three-pointer of the game to retake the lead at 33-28.
Campbellsport went on an 8-2 scoring run, featuring a Bobb three-pointer and McKenna Loehr converting an old-fashioned three-point play, giving the Cougars a 41-30 lead with ten minutes left in the game.
Baskets from Schladweiler and Reilly for the Cougars kept the Huskies at bay with the score at 45-38 with less than seven minutes on the scoreboard.
Laverenz knocked down a three-pointer from the wing, giving the Cougars a 51-44 lead with three minutes left in the non-conference matchup.
The Cougars were unable to expand on their lead in the final minutes of the game and allowed the Huskies to escape with a 55-51 non-conference win. In the game, Campbellsport led the entire game until the last minute.
Kiera Laverenz led the Cougars with 12 points, and Brittany Reilly pulled down 16 rebounds, showing why she is one of the leading rebounders in the state.
“We found a team that played together by playing team basketball, but now we have to learn how to finish the game with a win,” said Head Coach Ray La Batte.
Campbellsport girls basketball will travel to Lomira on January 9 at 7:15 p.m.
