Campbellsport Softball Gets Two Dominating Wins on the First Saturday in May

Posted

On May 5, Campbellsport lost to Laconia 3-2 at home in the second matchup of the two Flyway conference teams during Parents' Night for the Cougars.
Campbellsport (7-8, 3-6) was able to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning over first-place Laconia (14-4, 8-1) by getting a double from Olivia McCarty and a RBI double from Mackenzie Helsell with two outs in the inning.
The Cougars held their 1-0 lead until the fifth inning when the Spartans scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead, but Campbellsport got a run back when Ayla Garvey sprinted home to bring the score to 3-2 after five innings.
Campbellsport had one final opportunity in the seventh inning thanks to a leadoff single by Garvey, but the potential tying run was stranded at second base when the game ended with the 3-2 Laconia win.

Olivia McCarty had a good outing of seven innings from the pitching circle to keep Campbellsport within striking distance in the matchup against Laconia.
Game Two at Wautoma
On May 3, Campbellsport defeated Wautoma 11-1 in six innings to cap off a productive day for the Cougars.
Campbellsport (7-8) took a 1-0 lead over Wautoma (10-8) thanks to an RBI triple from Megan McCarty for the visiting Cougars.
The Cougars’ offense really got going in the second inning, featuring an Emma Muraski triple to center field, allowing two runs to cross the plate to take a 4-0 lead.
Campbellsport’s bats continued with two outs when M. McCarty got another extra base hit with a double for an RBI and Olivia McCarty singling in a run to put the score at 6-0, but the Cougars weren’t done when Josie Twohig hit her second single of the inning to drive in the final run of the inning for a commanding 7-0 lead over Wautoma.
The Cougars got the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning with three singles from Ayla Garvey, Mursaki, and Peyton Hall, which resulted in M. McCarty getting an RBI after she walked with the bases full to push the lead to 8-0.
Wautoma scored a run in the fifth inning before the Cougars decided to close out the game in the sixth inning with the team facing two outs.
Muraski drove in the final two runs with a single to give Campbellsport the 11-1 win in six innings, with Peyton Hall having a strong performance in the pitching circle.
“Peyton was her typical self, pitching by not letting pressure situations get to her,” said Head Coach Dan Heisdorf.
Campbellsport’s offense was paced by Megan McCarty and Emma Muraski combining to drive in seven teammates during the non-conference victory.
“The girls hit really well on Saturday with making great adjustments at the plate by waiting for their pitch and not chasing balls out of the zone,” said Heisdorf. “ The defense played errorless ball in both games.”
Game One vs River Valley
On May 3, Campbellsport softball beat River Valley 8-2 in their first game of the day in Wautoma.
Campbellsort (7-8) got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning thanks to an RBI double from Ayla Garvey and an RBI single from Ava Sabish, then with two outs, Emma Muraski hit a single to drive in the final run of the inning to take a 3-0 lead over River Valley (6-9).
River Valley scored two runs in the fifth inning to close the gap to 3-2 before the Cougars responded, with two outs in the sixth inning, by scoring five runs to expand their lead to 8-2.
The Cougars received RBI singles from Peyton Hall and Kaylie Jandre during the sixth to bookend around RBI triples from Megan McCarty and Olivia McCarty, with M. McCarty driving in two runs to account for all five runs during the explosive inning for Campbellsport.
The 8-2 lead was all starter O. McCarty needed to get the complete game victory by getting ten strikeouts for the Cougars, with seven Campbellsport batters driving in runs to lead a balanced offense in the non-conference win.
“Olivia pitched very well in our first game of the day with her pitching the hardest I have seen her throw this year, and it’s impressive when a pitcher can go seven innings by not giving up a walk plus getting double-digit strikeouts,” said Heisdorf.
Vs Mayville
On April 29, Campbellsport softball lost 2-1 to Mayville in their Flyway Conference matchup at home.
Mayville (12-3, 7-2) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning over Campbellsport (7-8, 3-6) when the Cardinals scored two runs with two outs in the inning.
Both teams’ offenses were held at bay with the pitching from Mayville’s Allie Schwirtz and the Cougars’ starting pitcher, Peyton Hall, in the pitching circle.
The Cougars weren’t going into the night without a fight when Campbellsport got three consecutive singles from Olivia McCarty, Kaylie Jandre, and Emma Muraski to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to set up senior Megan McCarty at the plate.
M. McCarty drove the pitch deep into the clear, spring sky, looking to win the game with a grand slam for the Cougars, but the wind caused the ball not to be carried out of the park.
Campbellsport got a sac fly RBI from the near mighty swing to bring the score to 2-1 with the two outs. The Cougars weren’t able to get another run across the plate, resulting in a 2-1 Mayville win over Campbellsport.
Campbellsport softball traveled to Pewaukee on May 6 at 4:30 p.m. Then the Cougars will travel to Springs on May 7 (rescheduled from 5/1) and to Lomira on May 8, with first pitches scheduled for 5 p.m.
