On May 26, the four-seed Campbellsport softball team lost 5-3 to the fifth-seed Two Rivers at home in the second round of the WIAA Division 2 Softball Tournament.
Campbellsport’s (21-6) Emma Muraski hit a single in the first inning, giving the junior 100 hits in her softball career.
Olivia McCarty hit a home run over the center field fence in the second inning to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead over Two Rivers (16-10).
The Cougars got a double from Taylor Schladweiler, which was followed by an Ava Sabish two-run RBI double, increasing the Cougars ‘ lead to 3-0 after the second inning.
Two Rivers scored a run after loading the bases in the third inning before the Cougars recorded the third out.
The Purple Raiders scored two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at three in the high-tension playoff matchup to take a 5-3 lead over Campbellsport.
McCarty kept the score at 5-3 when she struck out the final batter in the fifth inning, ending the inning with Two Rivers runners on second and third bases.
Gracie Schwarz had an unassisted double play at third base for the Cougars after catching a pop fly to end another Purple Raiders scoring threat in the sixth inning.
Campbellsport got another defensive highlight when McKenna Loehr made a diving catch in the seventh inning, setting up the Cougars with their final opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the inning with the top of the batting order coming up.
Unfortunately, the Cougars’ offense was able to mount a comeback, which Campbellsport has done on multiple occasions, leaving the team with a 5-3 home playoff loss, ending the team’s season with a record of 21-6.
“We gave them too many free bases and our defense had a few errors that cost us,” said Head Coach Dan Heisdorf. “We started well on offense, scoring three runs early, but just couldn’t hit together after that.”
“Our 21-win season is a huge accomplishment for the program with the most wins in the regular season and possibly in school history, with the school record books going back to the late 90s,” said Heisdorf.
