On January 24, Campbellsport’s seven wrestlers finished in 23rd place with 38 points at the Herb Tyler Invitational at Sheboygan North High School.
Gavin Pickering finished fifth in the 138-pound class during the invite, pacing the Cougars on the day.
“Gavin wrestled a great tournament from start to finish, dropping two close matches to the runner-up and third-place wrestlers,” said Head Coach Alex Costello. “Gavin is peaking at the right time, and I am excited to see how he finishes up these next couple of weeks.”
Zach Zimdahl finished sixth in his 215-pound class and was 2-1 before withdrawing due to injury.
Vs St. Lawrence & Waupun
On January 22, Campbellsport girls’ wrestling beat Waupun 24-0, and Campbellsport boys’ wrestling defeated St. Lawrence 65-18 and Waupun 46-29 on Senior Night for Emersen Wissink, Porter Klotz, Zach Zimdahl, Gavin Pickering, and Jacob Allickson.
Coaches Costello and Heisdorf shared stories about each senior, followed by a short speech from one teammate per senior.
“It was an unforgettable night honoring our seniors,” said Head Coach Alex Costello. “We honored our five awesome seniors, which was a truly special moment for our program.”
Irelyn Woolhether (21-12) jumped to a 13-0 lead using two takedowns and a couple of nearfalls before pinning her opponent.
Emerson Wissink (28-7) got a quick takedown and was constantly on the attack, resulting in two near-fall points to get an 8-3 lead before securing a takedown to get the pin.
Savannah Ksoiszk (32-6) got a double leg takedown on a deep half to earn a pin.
Mya Schraufnagel (21-10) used two double-leg takedowns and a deep half of her own to win by pin.
“The girls took care of business tonight in front of a big crowd,” said Head Coach Dan Heisdorf. “Emersen got a big win on her senior night against an opponent she may see in our sectional, same with Savannah’s opponent.”
“We are trying to build our program, so for the girls to perform so well at a home meet, I am hoping they inspire more girls to give wrestling a try,” said Heisdorf.
“We kicked off with a dominant win over St. Lawrence by racking up nine pins, one technical fall, and one forfeit to cruise to 65-18 for our fifth conference victory,” said Costello.
“Porter started the dual versus Waupun with an exciting two-period pin in classic Klotz fashion,” said Costello. “Aiden has really stepped up the last few weeks and filled a key lineup spot in a big way, and I couldn’t be more proud of him.”
“Jacob got the Cougars back on track with a dominant 14-0 major decision, and Trayton stayed undefeated at home in duals this season with a technical fall win,” said Costello. “Gavin sealed the dual with a first-period fall after scoring a couple of quick takedowns.”
Campbellsport wrestling will travel to Lomira on January 29 at 7 p.m., and girls’ wrestling will travel to Whitefish Bay on January 30 at 3 p.m.
