On March 4, Campbellsport’s Emersen Wissink was named the Girls Flyway Conference Wrestler of the Year.
Wissink started wrestling in her junior year of high school and became a two-time conference champion and state qualifier in 2026.
She finishes her career with a 62-35 record and a season school record of 30 pins. Her 40 pins rank second all-time for wins in a season.
“Emersen came in and said she wanted to give it a try after receiving an email from me about wrestling,” said Head Coach Dan Heisdorf. “Emersen was a super shy, quiet kid then she came to a couple of open mats, and she really liked it with her being a hard worker right from the start. She was new to the sport, there were definitely some struggles, and we could really start to see her potential at the end of her junior year.”
“My favorite moments are when I won my match to qualify for state this year, and also just hanging out and having fun with my teammates at tournaments,” said Emersen Wissink.
“Wrestling is important to me because it has taught me how to have a strong and positive mindset, even if I am struggling. It taught me how to have mental toughness and also how to push myself,” said Wissnik. “I also think wrestling is important because girls don’t have another sport like it that challenges you and pushes you to be mentally tough, quick, strong, and well-conditioned.”
“After that, Emersen decided to lift weights, and she did all offseason, and that was huge for her. She was definitely stronger than most of the girls she wrestled,” said Heisdorf. “She went from finishing in the bottom half of most tournaments to winning four championships, one second, and three third-place finishes with the right mentality, and Emersen was dialed in every match; she didn’t let anything rattle her either.”
“Some of the biggest influences during my career were my parents, teammates, and coaches because they are always there to support me no matter what,” said Wissink. “Thank you so much! I am honored to get this award. I was not expecting it! Let me know if you need anything else from me.”
“My plans in wrestling are to wrestle at Grand Canyon University for their club team,” said Wissink. “ I am also hoping to coach a girls’ team in the future and help continue to grow the sport. I want to give back to the sport that did so much for me and help other girls develop and enjoy it.”
