On September 18, Campbellsport football defeated their Flyway Conference Rival, Mayville, 12-10 at home on a rainy night during Youth Night.

Mayville (3-2, 2-1) got on the scoreboard first with a nine-yard rushing touchdown by Joe Promersberger (119 rushing yards) on the first drive of the game to take a 7-0 lead over Campbellsport (2-3, 2-1) at the 7:15 mark in the first quarter.

The Cougars responded on the ensuing kickoff when Freshman Damien Braund exploded down the sideline in front of the Campbellsport bench for an energizing 85-yard kickoff touchdown to make it 7-6, with 7:02 left in the first quarter.

“Having a weapon like Damien is nice because he’s a good player with some big-play capabilities when he gets the ball in his hands and showed it on that kickoff return,” said Campbellsport Head Coach Todd Wondra.

Elliott Fleischman intercepted a Mayville pass in the second quarter, ending the Cardinals' drive at the Mayville 41-yard line with 3:11 left in the first half.

Mayville’s defense stopped the Cougars after the turnover to keep the score 7-6, with the Cardinals leading going into halftime.

The Cardinals recovered their onside kick to start the second half, but the Campbellsport defense stopped Mayville at the two-yard line after the Cardinals took over eight minutes off the clock.

Owen Mlsna made a 19-yard field goal at the 3:52 mark in the third quarter, giving Mayville a 10-6 lead.

Mayville caught a big break on the soaked Dan D. O’Brien Field when the Cardinals recovered a fumbled punt at the Cougars' 23-yard line with 11:16 left in the game.

The Cougars' defense stopped the Cardinals' offense at the three-yard line, forcing Mayville to kick a 20-yard field goal, with the attempt going left of the goalpost at 7:11 in the fourth quarter.

“Our defense has played well the past few weeks,” said Wondra. “ We preach to them that if we play disciplined football and read our keys, we have a good game plan every week, and they just need to execute when they get a chance. Stopping them deep in the red zone multiple times was big and the difference in the game.”

Campbellsport’s Cullan Flasch burst through the Mayville defense on the second play after the missed field goal and ran down the sideline in front of the Cougars' bench for a 55-yard rush, setting Campbellsport up at the Cardinals' 25-yard line.

“Cullan continues to come up big when his number is called offensively and make some big plays on well-timed play calls for us,” said Wondra. “He runs hard, and when the offensive line gives him a crease, he takes it and makes the most of it.”

Senior Running Back Carter Gellings (52 yards) powered through the Mayville defense for a tough 12-yard rushing touchdown, giving Campbellsport a 12-10 lead with 4:27 remaining in the game.

“Carter has been a workhorse for us since we made the switch for him,” said Wondra. “ He runs hard every time the ball is in his hands.”

Mayville would have one final opportunity to avoid losing to their Rival Cougars, and the Cardinals started methodically moving down the field.

Senior Defensive Back Quinten Cappozzo made the game-winning interception for Campbellsport when he caught the Mayville pass at the Cougars' 15-yard line with 45 seconds on the game clock.

“Sealing the game with Quinten’s interception was great because he has been playing good ball for us since being put in the starting lineup,” said Wondra. “He works hard and is a smart player out there.”

The Campbellsport's rain-soaked players, coaches, and fans erupted in celebration with their 12-10 conference win over Mayville.

“When we get together with Mayville, we always know it’s going to be a battle and a fourth-quarter game,” said Wondra. “The rain just muddled everything up, and I believe it played in our favor.”

“It was the cause of mistakes on both sides, and thankfully we were able to overcome them and come out on top,” said Wondra.

Campbellsport football will travel to NFDL on September 25 at 7 p.m.
