Kewaskum Boys Basketball has Tough Loss Against Mayville

Kewaskum boys basketball hosted the Mayville Cardinals in the field house on December 22. The Indians had an overall record of 2-6 and a conference record of 1-2 in the Glacier Hills Conference. The Cardinals had an overall record of 4-1 and a conference record of 4-0 in the Flyaway Conference. Mayville was entering the game with a four-game win streak, and Kewaskum had just won their second game of the season against Campbellsport on December 20.
The Cardinals’ Landen Baker scored the first point of the game on his second free throw at 17:02. Jackson Corbin scored the first point for the Indians on his second free throw attempt, bringing the score to 1-5. Eli Steinbauer went on to score two points for the Indians at 13:34 to make it 3-5. Joe Promersberger scored a three-pointer for Mayville at 12:37, extending their lead to 8-3. Charlie Gambino scored a two-pointer at 10:50 to bring the Indians closer at 8-11. Kewaskum’s Chase Cook scored a three at 10:11, tying the score at 11-11. Oliver Grover scored again for the Indians at 8:54, extending the Indians’ lead by two. Carter Unger continued the Indians’ momentum, scoring a three-pointer, bringing the score to 20-13 with a little under eight minutes left in the first half. Jackson Corbin pushed through the Mayville defense and scored a two-pointer at 5:50 for a 25-15 lead. Mayville was able to quickly move the ball back down to their end of the court with Joe Promersberger scoring a quick two-pointer. Oliver Grover made one out of two free throws to give the Indians a strong lead, ending the first half at 34-31.
During the second half, both teams scored back and forth, keeping the score close. With a little over four minutes left in the second half, the Indians were down 59-64. Jackson Corbin scored a two-pointer, bringing the score to 61-65. The Cardinals then proceeded to score on one out of two of their free throw attempts. Jackson Corbin scored another two points at 1:22 for an overall score of 63-66. Charlie Gambino scored another two-pointer for the Indians after Mayville scored on another free throw. Eli Steinbauer attempted a free throw with about ten seconds left in the game, but missed. Chase Cook made two free throws with three seconds left in the game to bring the final score to 68-72, and giving the Cardinals the non-conference win.
The boys played an away game on Monday night at Kettle Moraine Lutheran. They play at home on Friday, Jan. 9, against Port Washington. The game starts at 7 p.m
