On September 11, Kewaskum football lost 29-7 to Port Washington at home in their Glacier Trails Conference matchup.
Port Washington (4-0, 2-0) scored on an 86-yard passing touchdown from Jack Bunyan to Kiya Sullivan, giving the Pirates a 7-0 lead over Kewaskum (1-3, 0-2) in the first quarter.
Kewaskum’s Henry Luedtke intercepted the ball and returned it to the Port Washington 22-yard line.
The Indians offense got the ball to the three-yard line before fumbling the ball, ending their latest scoring chance.
“It’s critical to score early in games against good teams; momentum and confidence are vital, especially for younger teams, and coming away with no points was a decisive factor in the outcome of the game,” said Kewaskum Head Coach Jeff Rondorf.
The Pirates got a 12-yard passing touchdown from Bunyan to Sullivan, increasing their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter with 6:27 remaining in the half.
Landon Scheel (187 yards) burst the Pirates’ defense for a 37-yard run to get Kewaskum back in the red zone.
“Our offensive line, tight ends, and fullbacks did a good job giving Landon space to run, and again this week he ran with purpose,” said Rondorf. “Early in the season I was pleasantly surprised by how hard he ran and finished carries. Now I expect it from him and appreciate his effort.”
Kewaskum’s drive ended when Sullivan picked up a fumble and sprinted for an 86-yard touchdown to push the Pirates to a 22-0 halftime lead.
Scheel scored a one-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter for Kewaskum, making the score 22-7.
Bunyan threw a 54-yard passing touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the Pirates’ lead at 29-7.
Kewaskum’s defense got a sack from Jude Johnson, and the Indians’ Marcus Fleischman blocked a field goal as highlights in the final quarter.
Port Washington left the field with a 29-7 win in a game that felt much closer than the final score shows.
“We played with great effort and energy again; we just need to find a way to win games,” said Rondorf. “After the game, I challenged our guys to make a greater commitment to their preparation, and the second half of the season is a memorable one.”
Kewaskum football will host Grafton on September 18 at 7 p.m.
