On September 4, Kewaskum football lost 19-0 to West Bend West on the road in their Glacier Trails Conference Opener.
Kewaskum (1-2, 0-1) and West Bend West (2-1,1-0) were in a scoreless tie until Spartans Quarterback Collin Grass scored with 2:53 left in the second half to give West Bend West a 6-0 lead over the Indians.
“The defense played outstanding and set the tone and led the charge against a well-coached and talented Kewaskum offense,” said West Bend West Head Coach Taylor Ripplinger. “ Being able to force three turnovers and score on defense were huge momentum shifts. Our pass rush was able to force some throws and get to their QB, which led to a successful night on that side of the ball.
Taylor Reinhart intercepted a pass for West Bend West, returning it for a touchdown, giving the Spartans a 12-0 halftime lead.
“Taylor was a key piece to that success with the 2 interceptions and defensive touchdown,” said Rippinger. “He’s a playmaker for us, and when they challenged him, he came away on top.”
Kewaskum’s offense drove to the Spartans’ 20-yard line led by their running game (144 rushing yards) before West Bend West got the ball back by fumble recovery by Holden Ehle on an Indians fumble.
Grass scored his second touchdown of the game, giving West Bend West a 19-0 lead with 2:51 remaining.
“Collin stepped up in the clutch and found his way for the 38-yard touchdown to put the game away,” said Ripplinger. “He was poised all night, and when we needed the big play, our Offensive Line paved the way.”
The Spartans’ defense secured a 19-0 shutout win over Kewaskum in the conference-opening matchup.
“Offensively, our first drive started well but fell behind the sticks due to penalties and didn’t score,” said Kewaskum Head Coach Jeff Rondorf. “If we put points on the board that first drive, I believe our night offensively would have been better.”
“It’s always a good feeling starting conference play 1-0, but that’s all we look at it as a start,” said Ripplinger. “We know there are some extremely talented teams in this conference, and Kewaskum is one of them. You have to show up week in and week out in this league to have success.”
“Our defense played and did everything they could to give us a chance to win the game,” said Rondorf. ‘The late score was a result of our offense putting our defense in tough spots all night.”
Kewaskum football will host Port Washington, and West Bend West will travel to Kettle Moraine Lutheran, with both games on September 11 at 7 p.m.
