Kewaskum Girls Soccer Season Ends in Regional Final

Posted

The Kewaskum girls varsity soccer team kicked off Regional play on Thursday, June 5 when they traveled to North Fond du Lac.
The Indians knew that they had to come out hard right away, and they did just that when sophomore Annika Kreuser scored just 14 seconds into the game.
The Indians controlled the tempo from that point and earned their second goal in the 23rd minute when sophomore Malia Volesky scored off a beautiful cross from sophomore Brooke Pritchard.
Senior Caitlin Finger took it from there and scored two goals in the game. Her first came in the 38th minute off an assist from freshman Dana Jacobson and her second in the 67th minute assisted by junior Mari Gurrola.
The Indians’ defensive line was able to keep North Fond du Lac scoreless, making the final score 4-0 Kewaskum.

Coach Piwani commented, “We could not have had a better start than this. We discussed setting the tone from the start and being really aggressive on offense. The girls did exactly that by scoring immediately off the opening kickoff. This really allowed us to control the game from start to finish. I am really proud of the girls and how they really worked to improve all season. It really started to show in the second half of the season. It was great to extend our season and get our seniors at least one more game. This was a true team effort and all three levels played really well.”
As a result of the win in North Fond du Lac, the Indians moved on to the second round of play where they found themselves back on the field of the defending state champs Cedar Grove-Belgium on Saturday, June 7.
The Indians came out hard defensively and kept the game scoreless for over twenty minutes, but still found themselves down three goals to none at halftime.
Cedar Grove-Belgium continued to attack offensively in the second half, and ended the game with seven goals.
The Indians didn’t go down without a solid fight, however, and freshman Kenley Yapp took a hard foul in the box to give the Indians a penalty kick. Senior Caitlin Finger took the shot and scored to put Kewaskum on the board. The final score was 7-1.
Coach Piwani stated, “The girls gave it everything they had in this game but ran into the powerhouse defending State Champions. I am very proud of the effort they put in. The girls left it all on the field. Cedar Grove-Belgium is a great team, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them at state again this year. A huge thank you to the seniors, Victoria, Emily, Marisa, Caitlin, Carissa and Ayla. They really made this season fun and rewarding. They can look back at the past four years and be really proud of the work they put in and the imprint they left on Kewaskum soccer.”
The East Central Conference also announced the All-Conference athletes in girls’ soccer. Making First Team All-Conference are Emily Melzer, midfielder, and Alayna Lambrecht, defender. Making Second Team All-Conference is Caitlin Finger, attacker. Receving Honorable Mentions are Cameron Boelte, midfielder, Marisa Strankowski, defender, and Victoria Kenworthy, goalie.
