On September 8, the Kewaskum Girls Volleyball Team hosted the West Bend West Spartans at the field house for their first home game of the season.
During the first set, Kewaskum (5-4, 2-0) took their first timeout at 5-10 after a serving run from West Bend (1-6, 0-2). The Indians caught up, bringing the score back to 11-11, but allowed the Spartans to run on them again to make the score 12-17.
Kewaskum fought hard to come back and score five more points, but they ultimately fell short in the first set, losing 17-25.
They came back with a strong start during the second set with a block by Kylee Holland (Fr.). Izzy Boyung came back with a big kill to side out for Kewaskum, taking Holland back to serve. Sarah Zeman and Beckett Schutz had another big block to bring the lead to 5-1, causing the West Bend Spartans to take a timeout where they came back and successfully sided out.
Both teams kept the competition tight, with Kewaskum continuously holding their lead by a few points until West tied the game 12-12. Kewaskum was able to quickly regain their lead.
Schutz had a big kill at 17-13 to keep Holland serving, followed by a big kill from Boyung, causing West to take a timeout with Kewaskum leading 18-13.
Holland responded after the timeout with an ace followed by a service error. Kewaskum took their timeout after West Bend scored a small run when Kewaskum was still ahead 19-17.
The competition remained close with Kewaskum continuing their momentum to win the second set 25-20.
Both teams went back and forth during the beginning of the third set, tying at 5-5 with Ava Komp scoring off a kill from the right side. Zeman followed with a block, and Boyung had a kill from the right side to bring their lead to 8-6. Komp had another kill from the right to bring it to 9-6.
Holland scored on a kill from the middle, causing the West Spartans to take a timeout when the Indians were up 14-8. Schutz came back from the timeout with another kill from the right side.
Kewaskum was able to maintain their lead to bring the score to 20-14 when the West Bend Spartans took their second timeout of the set. Kewaskum gave up a few points, taking a timeout at 21-19, after giving up a point on serve receive.
After a handful of errors, West tied the game 21-21, and West ultimately pulled ahead 22-21. Stella Scherger immediately followed up with a fill to tie them again 22-22.
West Bend tied the game again with a block to bring the score to 23-34 with 11 serving. The Spartans scored on a tip from the outside.
Both teams started the fourth set with a lot of energy. Zeman had a single block to score the fourth point for Kewaskum.
West Bend extended their lead after two aces by Spartan Libero Maci Speath. Kewaskum took their first timeout of the set with the score 5-11.
They came back from the timeout and scored off a kill from Boyung; she scored off another kill to bring them back to 8-11. Ruth Sadowniko kept this momentum going with an ace.
Kewaskum was able to creep back to score the game at 12-12, but gave up a point to West on a tip kill. Zeman had three kills from the middle to bring Kewaskum into the lead at 15-14.
The two teams tied again at 17-17, and West was able to score off a kill on Boyung in the back row. Zeman tied the game again off a kill from the middle to bring it to 18-18. Morgan Vetter served for Kewaskum, acing the Spartans on the 21st point.
Schutz had a kill on the right side off an out-of-system ball from Libero Vetter. Milli Kreif then aced the Spartans, taking their timeout with Kewaskum up 24-20. Kewaskum ended the set with a win off of a block from Holland.
Kewaskum scored the first point of the set, sending Sadowniko back to serve. Kewaskum took the lead early when West took their timeout, and Kewaskum pulled ahead 4-1. West tied the game at 4-4 with a kill on the outside from Sophie Williams.
Kewaskum took their first timeout after West pulled ahead 5-4 after two errors from Kewaskum. Both teams stayed neck and neck after Boyung tied the game off a kill from the outside at 6-6.
Zeman had a kill from the middle to score the 11th point, followed by a service error from Kewaskum. The Indians were able to side out a kill from Tessa Scherger.
Kewaskum was able to continue their momentum to win the fifth set with a final score of 15-11.
The Kewaskum girls volleyball team won 3-2 against the West Bend West Spartans.
Kewaskum girls volleyball hosted the West Bend East Suns on September 15 for a Glacier Trails Conference game after print time.
