On September 15, the Kewaskum Girls Volleyball Team hosted the West Bend East Suns at home for a Glacier Trails Conference game. They held a Dig Pink fundraiser in partnership with the Side-Out Foundation.
A five-point run in the first set, then a side-out to bring the score to 1-5, then a service error to make it 1-6. A kill from Tess Scherger to take Kewaskum to 6-10. Kewaskum then had a service error to give the ball back to West Bend, allowing the score to get to 7-12. Final score: Kewaskum loss, 18-25
During the first set of the game, Kewaskum senior Milli Kreif broke the school's all-time assist record, with 1724 assists. The record was previously held by Maddie Marquardt with 1723.
Kewaskum also started the second set in a deficit, but worked to creep back into the game. Tess Scherger got a kill at 5-6, then West Bend scored on a tip to extend their lead to 5-7. Kewaskum took a timeout at 5-8 but continued to struggle to regain their lead.
Kewaskum allowed West Bend to take control of the game, letting the score get to 8:16. When Kylee Holland went back to serve, she was able to go on a serving run, acing the Suns to score the 12th and 13th points for Kewaskum.
West Bend East took a timeout after this at 13-16, then sided out on a kill. Sarah Zeman responded with a kill from the middle to get the ball back for Kewaskum.
Zeman followed it up with a block to score 16-18 for Kewaskum. Scherger got a kill at 18-21 for Kewaskum, followed by an ace from Ruth Sadowniko.
There was a big block from Holland that tied the set 22-22. Kewaskum took their second timeout of the set at 22-23. Holland had another big kill to tie the game again at 23-23, sending Scherger back to serve.
East scored their 24th point on a tip kill. Holland had another kill to tie again at 24-24, with Kewaskum then taking the lead for the first time in the set, 25-24, off a tip kill. West Bend East took a timeout. Kewaskum won 26-24.
Kewaskum started the third set carrying momentum from their win, scoring the first three points. Schedger had an ace to score the third point of the set.
West Bend had a kill to sideout, scoring their first point, but gave up the point to Kewaskum on a service error. Holland had an ace for the fifth point.
West Bend took a timeout at 11-1 after getting aced three times by Holland. Izzy Boyung scored an out-of-system kill to get the ball back for Kewaskum at 12-2. West Bend fought back and was able to come back slightly.
Zeman and Holland had back-to-back kills, bringing the score to 16-8. Scherger aced the Suns to make it 20-13 for Kewaskum. Holland aced the Suns twice again to score 24-14. Boyung ended the set with a kill to end the score at Kewaskum 25-18.
Scherger started the fourth set with a point for Kewaskum off a kill from the outside down the line and repeated it to score the second point. Kewaskum and West Bend tied the set at 4-4, followed by back-to-back service errors.
After a scrappy rally, Hoyun scored on a tip kill for Kewaskum to bring it to 6-4. West Bend took their first time-out after the set after Boyung had a run of kills from the outside to bring the score to 10-4.
Zeman had a kill from the middle to take Boyung back to serve 11-5. Becket Schulz had a kill from the right side, scoring 14-5, followed by a two-kill from Scherger to make it 17-5.
Boyung scored off a backrow attack to extend Kewaskum’s lead to 18-5. Ruth Sadowniko aced the Suns again to score 20-7. Holland had a kill to score again for Kewaskum, 21-10. Kewaskum was able to win the fourth set 25-15.
On September 17-18, the Kewaskum team took part in a tournament at the Milwaukee Sting Center.
They played against some tough competition but lost each match, facing Franklin in two sets (21-25, 22-25), Kimberly in two sets (15-25, 15-25), Mukwonago in three sets (17-25, 29-31), Pewaukee in three sets (25- 21, 25-26, 10-15), and Appleton North in three sets (25-22, 22-225, 8-15).
They played at home in the Field House on September 22 against Kettle Moraine High School for a conference match after print time and will travel to the Appleton East Patriot Invite on September 26.
