Campbellsport Boys Cross Country State-Bound for Fourth Straight Year

Posted

On October 23, the Campbellsport boys cross country team won the Kewaskum Sectional with 44 points to advance to state for the fourth straight year.

The Cougars won the sectional championship, with the top three runners defeating the second-place team, Port Washington, by 55 points.

“Qualifying for the State Meet one year is special, and to do it four years in a row is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Campbellsport Head Coach Mike Kulibert.  “These teams have worked hard and stayed committed. I’m very proud of what they’ve accomplished and the tradition they have built.”

Senior Garrett Pickering won the individual sectional championship as the top runner with a time of 15:32.

“I believe Garrett Pickering has had this goal of winning an individual Sectional Championship for a long time,” said Kulibert. “Garrett has done this by putting in countless hours of training and hundreds of miles to make it happen. He is looking forward to running the challenging State Meet course and to the competition he will face next week in Wisconsin Rapids.”

Junior Mason Dirmeier finished in second place at 16:13, with Senior Caleb Siebauer close behind in third place with a time of 16:22.

“I am grateful because we have grown a culture where we pass on the tradition of hard work and dedication,” said Campbellsport Senior Caleb Siebauer. “Over the years throughout my high school seasons, every year has been filled with hard work, which I think really attests to our fourth straight state appearance.”

“With so many talented runners from other schools, it’s not often you see three teammates finish 1-2-3 at a Sectional Meet,” said Kulibert. Garrett, Mason, and Caleb are great friends who work out together during the off- season, and their families often travel together to meets during the off-season. They push each other to get better, and it’s great to see their hard work pay off.”

Freshman Porter Faust finished in sixth place at 16:38, and Auden Walker came in at 18:09 for 32nd place for the Cougars.

“Porter Faust’s sixth-place finish is very impressive, especially as a freshman. His family moved to the Campbellsport District when he was in eighth grade, and Porter quickly became fast friends with Mason and then, of course, Caleb and Garrett,” said Kulibert. “Porter shares their work ethic and commitment to improving. He ran a personal best at Sectionals by 30 seconds.”

“The state cross country meet is unpredictable, not only with the results but also the weather,” said Siebauer. "On top of that, the state meet is a course that challenges runners from all over the state with many hills all over the course, which makes it one of the hardest courses in the state, making it fun for the last meet of the year.”

“The team has had some strong years in the past, and we are ready to compete this year and want to do our best,” said Campbellsport Junior Mason Dirmeier. “The state meet is very difficult, with hills that are brutal in the second and third miles, making it a very painful race.”

The Campbellsport girls cross country team finished in 12th place with 285 points at the Kewaskum Sectional.

Madeline Kester paced the girls' team with 28th place for the Cougars, finishing the sectional meet at 21:09.

The Campbellsport boys cross country team will compete at the WIAA Division 2 State Cross Country meet on October 31 in Wisconsin Rapids at 2:35 p.m.
