Campbellsport Varsity Wrestling Coach
On January 23, the Cougar wrestlers got back on the winning track with a 48-17 Flyway win over Mayville.
It was senior night and also the induction into the CHS Hall of Fame for 1993 state champion Jeff Birschbach. Seniors John Volz, Brock Bentz, Ben Sabish, Aydryan Meilahn, Conner Sitzberger, and Jake Bowe were all recognized before the meet started.
Zach Zimdahl, Logan Knoeck, and Conner Sitzberger all won their matches by pin. Jacob Allickson, Emma Batzler, Ben Sabish, and Erich Cappozzo all won by forfeit.
Herb Tyler Invite Results
The Cougar boys wrestling team took 11th out of 29 teams at the Herb Tyler Invite at Sheboygan North last Saturday, Jan. 25.
At 285, Brock Bentz had a great day finishing in third place. In the quarter-finals, Brock pinned Cashten Hoffman of Weyawega-Fremont, who is ranked 11th in the state in D3, in just 41 seconds. Brock lost his semi-final match, but rebounded in his third place match by pinning Mitchell Boeder of Kewaunee in 1:13. Boeder is currently ranked fifth in D3.
At 106, Logan Knoeck had a solid day finishing in fourth place. His highlight of the day was beating 11th-ranked Alex Lee of Seymour by a score of 19-6 in the quarter finals.
At 165, Conner Sitzberger took fifth place and Jacob Allickson, wrestling at 113, also finished in fifth place.
Gavin Pickering, Erich Cappozzo, Hudson McCarty, John Volz, Porter Klotz, and Zach Zimdahl, all competed but did not place.
Girls take Sixth at Craig Belcher Scramble
The Lady Cougars kept their great season going by finishing in sixth place out of 26 teams at the Craig Belcher Scramble at Milwaukee Hamilton. Irelyn Woolhether (107 pounds) and Emma Batzler (126 pounds) each took first place. Woolhether had four pins on her way to a 5-0 day, including a pin in the championship match over D’Niyah Gaines (14-3 record) of Milwaukee Washington.
Batzler went 5-0, getting two pins, a tech fall, and a 12-0 major decision over Brenda Plata-Ascenio of Waukesha South, who came into the championship match with a 26-5 record.
At 132, Mya Schraufnagel went 3-1, taking second place. Schraufnagel’s only loss was a 5-3 decision to the eventual champion from Wisconsin Lutheran.
Emerson Wissink and Abigail Ksioszk each wrestled at 120 pounds. Ksioszk went 4-1 on the day and finished in ninth place and getting two pins along the way.
Wissink took 10th place going 3-2 and earned three pins.
Bay Port JV Tournament ResultsThe JV wrestled in the Bay Port tournament.
Elias Antonio went 2-1 with two pins and finished in third place.
Aiden Ohms also went 2-1 with two pins to finish in fifth place.
Reed Scannell took sixth and Tony Hughley took eighth.
Varsity will have their final conference match against North Fond du Lac on Thursday, January 30. The JV and girls varsity will be at the Whitefish Bay tournament on Saturday, Feb. 1.
