The Trail Sharks Finish in Third Place at Marshfield Race

Washington County Trail Sharks Mountain Bike Team

The Trail Sharks Mountain Biking Team, part of the Wisconsin National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), kicked off the race season this weekend at Powers Bluff County Park in Marshfield, WI.

This was the first year the Wisconsin league has had an event at this venue. This season is also the first time the WI league is divided into two conferences- North and South- due to the increase in participating athletes. The South Conference raced Saturday and the North Conference on Sunday.

The race morning started cool with overcast skies and a light mist. By the time races started, conditions cleared and became very favorable for the morning riders. The humidity crept back in, and the sun came out, making for a very warm ride for the afternoon riders.

It didn’t matter what time of day it was; many flat tires on the different courses added just another challenge for some of the athletes.

The trails consisted of gravel double tracks, single tracks, bridges, berms, and many rock gardens throughout the different courses, plus there was a mix of technical features, flowy downhills, and challenging climbs.

There were 575 athletes registered to race, and Washington County Trail Sharks had 27 student-athletes participate, with two athletes, Kennedy Whyte and Gracelyn Beimborn, taking the podium.

Washington County Composite took 3rd place overall in Division 2.

The Trail Sharks have their next festival weekend on September 19-20, with the race on Sunday at Minooka Park in Waukesha.
