Campbellsport Firefighters Geared Up to Teach St. Matthew’s Children

Posted

First graders from St. Matthew’s Catholic School learned about the important work firefighters do during Fire Safety Week last week.

Seeing what they learn in school apply in real life is important for a student’s education, and this experience gave them just that.

First grade teacher, Ashley Wunrow, explained why it is crucial, “It helps kids understand more what the responsibilities of a firefighter are and how they keep families safe.”

At the fire station in Campbellsport, firefighters showed the ambulance and the machines inside to explain what the different machines all do to help save lives. Inside they saw all the tools used during an emergency situation and what their individual uses are.

Additionally, they also saw the inside of fire trucks. Since there are many different types of fire trucks, they learned the unique things that each one can do. Students also got to spray a fire hose at a pretend house and put out fake flames.

Next, the firefighters put on their gear, this part was vital to educating the children in what to do during a fire. By having them suit up, the kids now know what the firefighters would look like in the unfortunate event that one of them is in a fire. They know not to be scared or run away from them and instead turn towards them for help.

With the gear, they demonstrated what the different aspects of their protective gear are.

Learning rescue techniques and what to do in an emergency were all important learning lessons.

Still buzzing with excitement, the students definitely enjoyed their visit. “Since we went last week, they are still talking about it,” Wunrow said.

St. Matthew’s thanks the Campbellsport Fire Department for hosting their students.
