Kewaskum Girls’ Soccer Face Tough Teams in Week One

Posted

The Kewaskum girls’ varsity soccer team wasted no time getting into game mode as they began the season with three games in their first week.
The Indians traveled to Slinger on Tuesday, April 8, where they found themselves battling back from a two-goal deficit early on. Senior forward Caitlin Finger scored two goals five minutes apart to tie the game at 2-2. Coach Luke Piwoni stated he was proud of the resilience the team showed and added, “Our midfield played really well today. That was our biggest unknown going into the game. I thought Cami Boelte, Dana Jacobson, and Alayna Lambrecht did a great job and will continue to grow into their roles.”
The week continued at home on Thursday, April 10, when the girls faced Kiel. Kewaskum came out hard and at the beginning of the game; it appeared to be a pretty even matchup. Kiel ended up getting two goals in the first half with the second coming right before the halftime whistle, which coach Piwoni stated, “Unfortunately, the energy and momentum of the game changed.” Despite Kewaskum taking nine shots throughout the game, the final score was 4-0 in favor of Kiel. A positive take away from the game was the defensive lines’ ability to work together. Coach Piwoni commented, “The center defenders did a nice job of leading the back line. Marisa Strankowski and Emily Melzer are our senior leaders back there and they never flinch. I am proud of their leadership and them working to help our younger players grow and learn what it takes to be successful in varsity soccer.”
The third game of the week took place on Friday, April 11, and had the team hopping back on the bus to travel to Cedar Grove-Belgium where they took on the defending state champions. Knowing that they would face a challenging opponent didn’t stop the team from coming out hard and giving it their all. The final score was 8-0 in favor of Cedar Grove-Belgium, but there were still some positive takeaways for the Kewaskum girls. Senior goalkeeper Victoria Kenworthy had 10 saves, and sophomore goalkeeper Malie Volesky had seven. Coach Piwoni commented, “Hats off to the goalkeepers. Both Victoria and Malia made some excellent saves. They were under constant pressure and really did a tremendous job.”
The Kewaskum Varsity girls will continue their season with two home games this week against Plymouth and Oostburg.
