On October 15, the Campbellsport boys cross country team won their fifth straight Flyway Conference Championship at Kiekhaefer Park in Fond du Lac, with five runners finishing in the top 10 with 19 points
“All-day rain and slick, muddy conditions made the hilly Kiekhaefer course even more challenging,” said Campbellsport Head Coach Mike Kulibert.
“After a runner-up finish his freshman year, senior Garrett Pickering captured his third straight individual conference title,” said Kulibert.
Pickering received strong support from his teammates Caleb Siebauer, Mason Dirmeier, and Porter Faust, who finished second through fourth, with Auden Walker in tenth place.
Pickering, Siebauer, Dirmeier, and Faust are first-team all-conference runners-up based on their conference performances.
Walker made the second team, with Aaron Engle earning honorable mention for the Cougars.
“The team has put a lot of work and miles coming into conference,” said Junior Mason Dirmeier. “Throughout the summer we were motivated and set on having an even stronger team year than we have had before.”
“Conference was a great step towards our final goal, with the meet being muddy and wet, but we knew we could still perform and get the job done out at Kiekhaefer
The Campbellsport girls cross country team finished third in conference with 109 points.
“It marks the first time in over a decade that Cougars finished higher than seventh or eighth in a conference meet,” said Kulibert.
Madeline Kester led the team with a 13th-place finish in 22:47. Karlee Dirmeier (22nd), Eva Pendowski (23rd), and Ava Basile (24th) also finished in the top twenty-five. Rounding out the team's scoring was Kourtney Bong in 27th.
Kester earned second-team all-conference honors, with Dirmeier, Pendowski, and Basile earning honorable mention with their conference times.
“Eva mentioned that she had a lot of fun on the course because of the mud and rainy conditions,” said Kulibert. “ Madeline decided at the last minute to wear racing spikes for the time and was very glad she did.”
Campbellsport cross country teams will be competing in the WIAA Division 2 Cross Country Sectional at Kewaskum on October 23rd.
