On October 18, the Washington County Trail Sharks competed at the fourth NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) Festival of the season at Nordic Mountain in Wild Rose.
A total of 603 athletes were registered to race, with 24 student athletes representing the Washington County Trail Sharks.
The team celebrated four podium finishes from Addison Schumacher, Clayton Thiermann, Liesl Ryan, and Kennedy Whyte.
For many athletes, this event marked their first race at the venue, which had been removed from NICA’s race schedule for several years before making a return this season. The course wound through the ski hill’s terrain, featuring approximately 500 feet of elevation gain per lap.
The morning began with chilly temperatures and bright sunshine, leaving early racers struggling to stay warm before their events. As the day progressed, temperatures steadily climbed, creating ideal conditions for racing.
Riders were challenged in this very technical course with a combination of doubletrack and singletrack sections. Racers were met with hard climbs, fast descents, tight turns, exposed roots, and challenging rock gardens. Controlling speed and choosing the best lines through technical sections were essential to navigating the course successfully.
. The next race will be our Championship race at the Trek Trails in Waterloo.
